Marie & Callum’s Wedding – Mavis Hall Park, near Edinburgh
- Thursday, 15th July 2010A ceremony by a private loch, Highland games, a reception and ceilidh in a stunning barn, a bonfire in a farmyard; Marie and Callum’s wedding at Mavis Hall Park was nothing short of magical. Set in 200 acres of idyllic countryside at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills near Edinburgh, Mavis Hall Park is an absolutely exceptional venue, perfect for a wedding with a difference.
Marie and Callum provided a relaxed, fun filled and memorable day for their guests, and I had a really wonderful time second-shooting their wedding with Pete and Laura Lawson.
Rain clouds were looming from time to time during the day and there were a few spits of rain but luckily the weather remained perfect all day. Marie checks for rain:
Callum’s mum tests her high heels for their céilidh suitability!
Marie’s beautiful wild flowers were picked on the morning:

The first impression of Mavis Hall Park is this beautiful and charming entrance:
Led by a piper, the guests take a leisurely 10 minute stroll to the ceremony through the woods on the Mavis Hall Park estate. It was a wonderful way to start the day.
The lovely humanist ceremony took place in front of a beautiful and peaceful private loch.
Marie and Callum literally tied the knot during their humanist ceremony:
Wellies were recommended in case of bad weather; fortunately they weren’t required.
Time for the highland games and to see what team the guests are on:
Getting changed for the highland games:
Callum tossing the caber:
Time for some relaxed portraits in the woods:

Bride versus groom sack race… but the sack wouldn’t fit over Marie’s dress…
Callum had a good attempt against his new wife but Marie easily won the race!
And then for some tug-of-war; groom’s side versus the bride’s side:
Marie’s team thought they won but were disqualified due to a few extra people helping!!
The guests arrive back at the barn after a fun filled afternoon
The barn at Mavis Hall was beautifully presented:
We were lucky to enjoy a meal and the hog roast was really delicious
Marie and Callum’s first dance was a ceilidh with all of their guests:
Later in the evening a bonfire was lit in the courtyard

It was a really wonderful day to capture and everyone enjoyed themselves so much; thanks to Marie and Callum for letting me be a part of your special day!

I so want to go to a wedding like this one, in any capacity. What a brilliant day. Your vignettes are fantastic James and your documentary story-telling is top notch throughout. Excellent stuff!
Lovely job! What a wedding and you’ve done a fantastic job of recording it. I love the woodland portraits and the bonfire shots in particular.
Stunning photos James, well done! Looks like a really fun wedding and beautiful venue.
James, DH and I need to get married again so you can come and do the photos for us – and make me look stunning – like you always seem to do with your brides! Fantastic set as usual, and such a fabulous place to get married, too. Great job!
Great selection of images and what a day by the looks of it!
Fantastic photography James and what a wonderfully fun wedding, wished I’d been there.

Excellent work, James! I love all the evening shots especially. They are so warm and cosy and beautifully lit.
Excellent job James, the two old guys sitting away from it all does it for me!!
